About Oneika and Her Yoga Life


Over 10 years ago I fell in love with yoga, but like with a lot of things at the time I couldn’t commit. It seemed that my life was getting in the way of my yoga. In 2011 in the midst of a lot of chaos and change I returned to my mat. Now with my life back in balance it seems that my life is yoga and yoga is my life. I’ve been lucky and blessed enough to combine all of my passions into a career. Happier and healthier than I’ve ever been I have yoga to thank. With so many Black women’s health in crisis I’ve become committed to talking about living a life that is fulfilling and fit. It’s my mission to to help Black women change their lives through and with yoga. Like George Eliot wrote, it’s never too late to be what you might have been.

Oneika believes in the idea of living life as a student, consistently learning and sharing ideas with people around her.

As a yoga instructor and yoga therapist Oneika works with groups and provides private one-on-one instruction or therapy and has over 1000 hours of teaching experience. Trained in breathing and a background in anatomy/physiology, her goal is to passionately inspire people to take an active role in maintaining and managing optimal health. Her classes in studios are powerfully charged while maintaining a focus on uniting the breath with alignment and movement. Oneika’s therapeutic yoga workshops and classes incorporate gentle yoga; propped restorative poses and guided meditation to allow people to connect with self-healing and relaxation. All classes begin and end with meditation. This is foundation of Oneika’s therapy and teaching style- that all movement and life begins with how one breathes and finding the body’s center.

Her writing about yoga and meditation has appeared on MindBodyGreen, BlogHer and other websites. Oneika is also an official blogger for Meatless Monday, part of the Monday Campaigns, a non-profit public health initiative. Oneika is also the Director of Training for Liberation Prison Yoga.

Oneika did her 200 hr teacher training with Floryoga in 2012. Oneika completed therapeutic yoga teacher training with Cheri Clampett and Arturo Peal in 2014 at Intergral Yoga in New York. In 2014 Oneika finished level I of Yoga for Cancer and Chronic Ilness with Jnani Chapman at the Intergral Yoga Institute in NYC. Oneika is grateful to all of her teachers for their guidance, wisdom and generosity of spirit.

My classes are a combination of dynamic movement and quiet reflection. I design classes that are meant to ignite a fire inside so we can see that we are our own best teachers. We start slow reach a peak and end class with a moment of meditation. I believe that it is as important to slow down as it is to move the body. Our true yoga begins in stillness.

  1. It’s so inspiring to see someone living such a full life. You often hear that if you focus on one thing you can be amazing. But if you focus on many, you’ll only ever be average at all. I want to prove that wrong in my love for health-yoga, abstract art and healthy eating/cooking! I believe we can live this full life in an amazing way! I’m so excited to start my journey, and see that you’ve been living yours happily! Cheers 🙂

    1. It’s been a journey and I’m constantly finding that there are ways to do what you love as a living. Hard, hard work to be sure but very rewarding (even when it doesn’t feel like it at the time). Thanks so much for your kind words, we’re all in this thing together😏. Om shanti

    I really enjoy reading your blog. And I thought about you when my friend told me about the project of a testimonial blog about yoga.
